Hull FC travelled to Warrington Wolves on Friday, with the Wire running out comfortable winners. However, the main talking point of the night came in the tunnel after the game.

Hull FC’s Director of Rugby, Richie Myler, has had a busy start to life in his new role. On Friday, the Black and Whites announced the signing of John Asiata from the Leigh Leopards. Asiata will take up a marquee contract at the MKM Stadium.

However, an altercation between Myler and Wolves head coach, Sam Burgess, dominated the headlines after the game. Now, former Hull FC player, Liam Watts, has called out the club for their handling of the affair.

After the game, cameras caught Burgess bumping shoulders with Myler. The incident occurred in the tunnel after a brief exchange of words. Burgess explained that tempers were high after the Wolves had made an error on their team sheet. Myler refused their request to amend the error, meaning Warrington lost a substitution.

Now, former Hull man, Watts, has weighed in on the situation. In an expletive laden post on X, he stated that Burgess was right to speak his mind.

“Anyone with any pride about themselves would allow it, it was never going to dictate the result. A lost sub puts extra pressure on players to play longer minutes than expected.

“Shit move by FC and to laugh about it isn’t fair game. Fair play to Burgess for saying it how it is.”

Burgess believes the decision lacked common sense

Explaining the incident, Burgess claimed that he believed common sense had not prevailed.

“Everyone else got it except the RFL, Hull complained, and I lost a sub. They said Adam Holroyd wasn’t in the 21. It’s just not good enough.

“There was an option to give us our sub back because there was a mess-up, but some choices were made not to do that.”

The decision from Hull FC was somewhat defended by Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin who argued that FC couldn’t be blamed given their need to try and use every advantage that they have got.

Speaking post-match, Wilkin said: “Sam Burgess is about respect, about honesty and about integrity. I think what he’s saying is he would like to be treated in the same way as he would treat the Hull FC.

“He was almost admitting there that if Hull FC had got that wrong, he would have let them have that substitution. Hull FC are desperate though.

“If he’s asked Richie Myler and they’ve said no, then can you blame them?”
