Chris Green has played for a number of Super League clubs such as Hull FC, Leigh Leopards and Wakefield Trinity, and the ex-pro who still remains involved as the game now as a keen watcher has made a bold prediction that Leigh Leopards will struggle in 2024.
Green is best remembered for his time at Hull FC, where he clinched the match-winning try over rivals Hull KR on Magic Weekend in 2013, winning the game 22-16.
He’s almost famous on that side of Hull for winning the 2016 Challenge Cup final against Warrington Wolves at Wembley, something that he’s stated was one of the highlights of his career.
Speaking exclusively with Serious About Rugby League he offered up his thoughts on what former club Hull FC could achieve next season in their second campaign with Tony Smith at the helm.
Green told Serious About Rugby League: “It’s interesting times for Hull. After going through some tough years, it feels like Tony has finally gotten his stamp on the team, and he has been doing that over pre-season. He was recruited a good team around him and hopes to get the best out of this team.”
He added: “They have a couple of good Hull lads, which is good to see, and a real mix of a Tony Smith team, I suspect, and they should do much better than last season.”
Green’s last club was Leigh Centurions, who have since become the Leopards. That transition was one that led to huge success in 2023 and SARL asked the former Leigh prop how well they will do in the upcoming campaign, and more importantly if they can repeat the successes of this recent season.
“It will be difficult for them to repeat what they did last season because a lot of those players played a lot of minutes last year and they did make the most out of that team, not the biggest of squad they did well to avoid any injuries last year,” Green explained.
“They have made a great signing in Matt Moylan, which will complement that team very well; it’s hard to predict at the start of the season. But if they make a good start, then I don’t see why they can’t repeat last year’s performance.”
It’s been confirmed that the Leopards will open their season up with a clash against Huddersfield Giants at home, a repeat of the game that had to be abandoned in 2023 due to floodlight failure before being concluded as a 32 minute match days later.
