Leigh Leopards squad makes big Zak Hardaker decision

Leigh Leopards have confirmed that John Asiata has been appointed Club Captain for the 2023 Betfred Super League campaign.

Asiata, 29, enjoyed an outstanding role in the Club’s promotion season last year, scoring seven tries in 31 games and earning Heritage Number HN#1527.

As well as his superb on-field performances, Asiata was highly respected for his stature and presence off the field as well as his extensive work in the community, supporting local community clubs, charities and club partners.

Leigh Leopards Head of Rugby Chris Chester said: “John has been a model professional since joining us at the start of 2022. His performances every week and his leadership throughout the year were the main reasons we as a club achieved what we did in 2022. Well done John!”

After making his NRL debut in 2014, he came to the UK with extensive top level playing experience for North Queensland Cowboys and Brisbane Broncos and having represented both Samoa and Tonga.

His huge role in the Club’s record-breaking season was recognised when he was shortlisted for Betfred Championship Player of the Year, an honour which was accorded to his team-mate Edwin Ipape.

The club has also made the big decision on who else will form the leadership group in 2023.

Two new signings in former Warrington Wolves skipper and star man Zak Hardaker have been included as confirmed by Adrian Lam.

“John Asiata, Jack Hughes, Lachlan Lam, Zak Hardaker will form our leadership group as voted for by the players. It’s a nice mix and the right one so I think the boys have got it right.”

On Hardaker’s role in particular, Lam said:

“I love having him in the squad. He’s been voted in the leadership group here and he was at a crossroads in his career and he can make Leigh his home for years to come.”
