Leeds Rhinos academy halfback and son of Super League legend joins new club

Hunslet have signed England Universities star and former Leeds Rhinos academy man Iwan Orr for the 2024 season.

Orr, who plays half-back or full-back completed a BA (Hons) in Sport Business Management whilst playing for the England Universities team in the Four nations and Presidents cup where they were victorious and unbeaten in both competitions.

Having been coached by Jamie Jones-Buchanan at Leeds Beckett, Orr has a good rugby background with his father being former Castleford half-back Danny Orr.

Hunslet Head Coach Dean Muir says “Iwan has been on a number of clubs radar. He is a player with talent and a great attitude to learning and becoming a better player. He is someone I’m excited to work with”

Playing at junior level Orr played with Joe and Olly Burton who were with the Parksiders last season. He was also coached by former assistant Coach Danny Burton which may have had some sway in him coming to the South Leeds Stadium.

Hunslet have also signed former Wakefield Trinity and Newcastle Thunder centre Mac Walsh for the 2024 season.

Highly rated at Wakefield Trinity Walsh had moved to the North-east as he was studying at Newcastle University where he had a spell in Rugby Union. But Thunder coach Chris Thorman brought him back into Rugby league for 2023.

At only 19 years old Walsh will join Dean Muir’s young Hunslet side. The Parksiders have an average age of 24 but have valuable Championship experience thanks to the signing of Walsh and it’s hoped he can play a crucial role in the Parksiders push for promotion.

Mac is described as “Very athletic and capable, he moves well and has a lot of potential in his game”

Hunslet fans will be excited to see him showing his skills in the Myrtle, White and Flame of Hunslet for 2024.
