Lee Mossop speaks about the charities he’s raising money for as his testimonial nears

Lee Mossop’s testimonial game against Warrington on February 4th is nearing, but the former skipper is keen to put the focus on those in need despite the fact his big day is approaching.

It’s 14 years since Mossop made his rugby league debut for Wigan before going on to help them to the double in 2013 playing in their Old Trafford triumph over Warrington before switching to the NRL.

After a brief stint with Parramatta he returned to Wigan but didn’t feature in Wigan’s Grand Final win over Warrington in 2016 before switching to Salford where he would become a legend of the club guiding the Red Devils to a first ever Grand Final in 2019. A year later he also played his part in getting them to Wembley. Unfortunately they lost both major finals but gave Salford fans memories which would last forever.

Unfortunately, playing careers can’t last forever and Mossop’s came to an end in 2021 and he’s rightly receiving a testimonial at the beginning of next month but in an interview with Salford’s website put the focus on the charities he’s raising money for.

“The first one was a hospital in West Cumbria,” Mossop said, “Obviously, I’m from Whitehaven and I’m a very very proud Cumbrian and recently a good family friend of ours passed away with cancer and the Hospice at Home charity were unbelievable in the way they looked after him.

“The second one was Two Brews which is a homeless charity in Salford and the city centre. Again, they’re a team of volunteers who get no financial reward from it. Recently they did a 48-hour sleep out which I did for one of the days, I couldn’t do both but it just opens your eyes to what the homeless go through. That again is a fantastic charity.

“The last one is Kids Can which is a children’s cancer charity. When I’ve got into it, I’ve learnt a lot more about it. Kids in the past got the exact same cancer drugs as adults so when they survive cancer 10, 15 years down the line they’re just riddled with other health conditions so this charity is phenomenal. They’re developing different drugs, medicines and procedures to treat kids with cancer so they make a full recovery and live a healthy life going forward.”

Three fantastic causes, you can watch the whole interview about Mossop’s testimonial and those charities here.
