“It’s always…” – Hull FC boss has his say on controversial yellow card

Hull FC coach Tony Smith

Hull FC Head Coach Tony Smith has had to deal with an awful lot in the first few rounds and things don’t get easier for him.

The Black and Whites, despite a valiant effort, lost to Catalans Dragons 26-12 but it was a costly effort with Matty Russell and Jack Walker both going off injured.

Hull FC Head Coach Tony Smith had his say on the injuries speaking to BBC Radio Humberside. He said:

“We had another couple of injuries today. We had to make two substitutions for two wingers. Matty Russell tore his pec, then Jack Walker moved onto the wing and Tex Hoy at fullback and Jack, scoring his try, tweaked his hamstring.

“You don’t usually account for two substitutions for two wingers. We have our backs against the wall at the minute.”

Hull FC didn’t make it easier for themselves conceding within 40 seconds. Smith said on the try: “Yeah it was a soft one to concede. Our marker got caught not square and instead of giving away the penalty he opted not to make the tackle which is a bit of inexperience so it gifted our opponents a good start which we’re not building at the moment.”

Hull FC were also struck a blow when Jack Ashworth was controversially sin binned for accidental head on head contact.

Smith had his say: “We’re trying hard, we’re working hard. We’re trying to change technique. It’s always going to be tough to come here and win. Whether that’s the score, the penalties or even with a sin bin and it was tough today.

“Although we had spirit, we weren’t quite tough enough to stay in the battle.”

Hull FC take on Leigh Leopards next weekend. The Leopards have also suffered three defeats in the opening four weeks of the season but unlike Hull FC, who defeated London Broncos last week, have yet to taste victory.

They’ve played a game less than everyone else due to Wigan Warriors taking on Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge.

They will also be desperate for a win in Round Five of the Betfred Super League.
