Hull KR starlet Mikey Lewis reacts to being awarded the Try of the Season award

Last season saw Hull KR truly caught the eye especially with ball in hand.

The Robins were perhaps the best side in the league to watch and much of that was down to their exciting halfbacks. Jordan Abdull excelled at scrum-half going on to be nominated for the Man of Steel Award whilst he was always joined by one exciting young halfback.

Rowan Milnes spent plenty of the season shining at stand-off but eventually Tony Smith settled on the brilliant Mikey Lewis alongside Abdull and the pair formed an exhilarating partnership which took the Robins all the way to the play-offs and even as far as the semi-finals for the first time.

The pair both crossed for vital tries in Hull KR’s triumph over Warrington which sent them into the final four of the competition, but it was Lewis’ effort which truly caught the eye.

His chip over the top and regather sent the Hull KR fans crazy and showed great skill and creativity but also great confidence from such a young player. The mesmeric try all but secured Hull KR’s place in the semi-finals alongside Catalans, Leeds and St Helens.

The try was subsequently awarded the Northern Try of the Season award this week with the award being presented to him by Hull KR assistant coach and Super League’s all-time leading scorer Danny McGuire.

Speaking on Super League’s official Twitter account about receiving the award, Lewis recalled the try: “When I put the ball down it didn’t really sink in until I looked all around and everyone’s running in.

“I just looked at the crowd and everyone’s going crazy so it was a really good experience.

“People ask me ‘what were you thinking at the time?’ I play with my eyes up and that’s what I’ve learnt to do over the last year. Take your hats off to everyone who has voted for myself, I appreciate it and hopefully there’s a lot more to come this year.”

A creative and exciting young stand-off, he’s considered one of the most talented young halves in the country and the sky truly is the limit for him. He could very well continue to improve in 2022 and take Hull KR to more success especially on the back of Lachlan Coote’s arrival.
