Hull FC fans call for terminated contracts after embarrassing derby defeat

Super League is finally back and it restarted with a bang with plenty of drama as Hull KR nilled their rivals Hull FC.

It was a game that almost had it all barring a Hull FC try as the Robins went on to beat the Black and Whites 22-0, the second year in a row that they have nilled their rivals at their home stadium.

With Hull FC having made plenty of NRL signings ahead of the new season there were high expectations, particularly for how the FC pack would work but it was a nightmare performance for much of that forward pack.

Franklin Pele introduced himself to Super League by putting Tyrone May flat on his back from the kick-off but he was sent his marching orders within 40 minutes of his debut.

The prop forward landed a brilliant shot on Hull KR captain Elliot Minchella but he followed it up with a wild swinging arm that clocked Minchella around the face and led to him seeing red.

Another Hull FC forward to see red was Ligi Sao who retaliated to Matt Parcell with a swinging knee to the head meaning Tony Smith’s side finished the match with just eleven men.

Rovers did finish a man short with Parcell sent for ten for his initial action towards Sao in which he roughed the Hull FC man’s face up in the tackle.

Between all the cards there were five Hull KR tries, two from debutant Niall Evalds, one from Kelepi Tanginoa on debut as well as scores from Mikey Lewis and Matt Parcell.

However, with the game being the first Super League action in over 125 days and so much action happening, social media was rife with reactions.

The general consensus surrounding Pele’s red in the first half was that it was a guaranteed red, Jon Wilkin stating on Sky Sports that it would be a red card in “1994, never mind 2024”.

Despite that, some Hull FC fans thought otherwise with one fan claiming “it wasn’t even that bad”, but the majority of FC fans were rightfully disgusted with the actions of their new signing.

One fan asked: “Why do we get rid of Kane Evans, Liam Watts and Josh Griffin just to bring in another card machine?”

Another even went as far to joke that the club should cut ties with Pele immediately.

As for the red card for Sao there were big question marks among some who couldn’t understand why he saw red for retaliation, but Parcell just a yellow for instigating.

As referee Liam Moore explained it was the use of the knee to the head with force that meant he saw his marching orders, but some fans were left questioning the decision.

One asked: “What did Ligi Sao get red card for ? Looked like got eye gouged to me.”

Another agreed, stating: “Ligi Sao getting mugged & ends up being sent off trying to defend himself.”

There were numerous fans who believed that he had been “hard done by”, but for many, it just signified what looked like the start of a long season for Hull FC.

Ex-Super League man Thomas Minns perhaps summed it up best, tweeting: “Watching this game I can’t see where Hull FC will score from at all? Good players but who brings their x factor??”
