Hilarious story behind Lachlan Lam’s winning drop goal

Leigh Leopards Lachlan Lam and Zak Hardaker Challenge Cup Final

Leigh Leopards are your 2023 Challenge Cup winners after they broke Hull KR hearts with a golden point drop goal in one of the all time great Challenge Cup Final moments.

It was a great game and it was hard to pick a winner and in the end it was the brilliance of Lachlan Lam that decided the game.

He scored Leigh’s opening try of the game backing up a Kai O’Donnell break in the first half and crossing under the sticks to give the Leopards a 8-6 lead at the time.

A Matt Parcell try sent the game to golden point where Lam was on hand to nail a drop goal and win the game.

Funnily enough his father and coach Adrian Lam revealed that he has been struggling in training.

“It’s good mate. I’m still trying to get over what just happened,” Adrian said on BBC.

“We have been practicing that set up for the drop goal for a couple of weeks, and he hasn’t exactly been sharp-shooting in training – It didn’t look pretty but it got the job done mate.”

His son Lachlan added:

“It doesn’t feel real. I hit it and it was floating through the air and I was just wishing that it had the legs.

“Thankfully it flew through. I have hit about a hundred of them in training in the last month so it’s good to get one through.”

Lachlan Lam was also awarded the Lance Todd Trophy as the Man of the Match after a great performance gave Leigh a first Challenge Cup since 1971.

In golden point Hull JR were awarded an early penalty but failed to find touch.

Leigh would then miss the first shot at a one pointer before Hull KR had a chance with brad Schneider going from 50 metres out and pulling wide.

But with the third effort of the game, Lachlan Lam was teed up and nailed it between the sticks at the Leigh end right in front of all their fans.

It was a truly great moment in rugby league and will be remembered for years and years to come.
