Ground breaking Super League TV move set to be announced

The 2024 rugby league season is set to be a historic one for a number of reasons as a new era starts in the sport we all know and love especially in Super League.

This year marks the real beginning of IMG’s new era in the sport as they look to revamp the sport and ensure that it can be a bigger success going forward growing commercially as well as seeing an increase in the size of fan bases.

Their illustrative grades were revealed at the end of 2023 and their first official grades will be revealed at the end of the 2024 season and will determine which teams will be included in Super League in 2025.

2024 also marks a new area for the sport’s TV coverage. 2023 saw the expiry of a number of TV deals with Sky Sports, Channel 4 and Viaplay with BBC’s set to expire with the Challenge Cup in 2024.

In a groundbreaking move for the Sport, IMG, the RFL and RL Commercial agreed a new deal with Sky Sports. This was worth slightly less than the original deal but is still worth over £20 million. This is alongside the new streaming service SuperLeague+.

This deal will give the sport a new level of coverage with every game shown but the sport has still been looking for a free to air broadcaster with Channel 4 competing for the rights only to reportedly miss out to the BBC.

Serious About Rugby League understands that this deal is set to be announced imminently in what is a major boost for our amazing sport as we head into a pivotal new era.

They will show one game a week likely on BBC Two from 17:30 with kick off at 18:00. They will continue to cover the Challenge Cup with Premier Sports reportedly set to join the sport again after covering the Championship in the past. They are set to cover Championship games on Sunday evenings as well as the Challenge Cup games not covered by the BBC.
