Former Wigan Warriors fullback joins new club ahead of new season

Former Wigan Warriors fullback Cian Tyrer has become the latest to join the impressive squad at Oldham RLFC being pieced together by former Hull FC and St Helens star Sean Long.

A former player of Rochdale has been on trial at a club during pre-season. Now, he has signed a contract with Oldham that will last until the end of the 2024 season. The contract also includes a one-year extension option.

Roughyeds boss Sean Long has been impressed with his attitude in pre-season: “Cian came to us off his own back because he wanted to be a part of what we are building here.

“He has been training with us for nothing, but he backed himself and it’s paid off. I’ve been really impressed with how he applies himself in training, he just gets on with the work.

“He played forty minutes against Keighley and did well. His attitude deserves a contract and he’s a likeable lad as well.”

The 22-year-old is scheduled to play against his former club this weekend as Roughyeds aim to defend the Law Cup at the Crown Oil Arena.

“I’m buzzing,” Tyrer said of signing the deal, “I’ve been here a few months and really enjoyed it. Everybody has settled in and we’ve become mates really quick – I just can’t wait for the season to start.

“My first goal was to get a contract and now I want to focus on establishing myself in the team each week and hopefully we can win some silverware too.

“I’m looking forward to facing my old club, and it’ll be a good test to see what they’re like and see where we’ve progressed since Keighley.”

He scored 28 tries in 44 appearances during his stay at Rochdale. His performances in the 2022 season earned him a nomination for the League One Young Player of the Year award. He scored a try every other game on average last year for Rochdale. However, the team missed out on the play-offs by two points. Hornets reported that over 1000 tickets have been sold so far for the 71st match, which starts at 3pm.

Despite losing young players like Cian Tyrer and more recently Logan Astley, the club still have a very healthy squad for next year.

Recently Jai Field and Abbas Miski signed long term deal with the club to stay for the next four years whilst the club have a terrific young core of their squad with players like Ethan Havard and Brad O’Neill.

Wigan have one of the best academies in Super League and this is likely to only improve and produce more talent like Tyrer in the future.
