Former St Helens and current Wakefield Trinity star granted RFL testimonial

Testimonials are a brilliant way for the sport to pay back to it’s best servants and we’ve seen that in spades lately with perhaps the most iconic testimonial of all time being Jamie Jones-Buchanan’s, which he selflessly shared with Rob Burrow to raise funds for MND, in front of a packed out Leeds Rhinos crowd at Headingley.

More players who are having testimonials include Kyle Amor with the former St Helens man having one this year, but it’s another ex-Saint who has just been awarded one for 2024.

That man is Matty Ashurst of Wakefield Trinity with the club confirming today that the 33-year-old has been granted a testimonial from the RFL for services to the game.

Ashurst started his career with Saints before moving to Salford Red Devils but ultimately he will be remembered at Wakefield, having played at Belle Vue since 2015 playing 191 games and notching a career total of just shy of 300 Super League matches.

Trinity announced the news via their website.

“Wakefield Trinity is delighted to confirm that Club Captain, Matty Ashurst, has been granted his 12-month testimonial by the RFL following his signing of a new one-year deal with the club.

“Over the past 10 years, Ashurst has been ever-prominent in the Wakefield side, making his debut in 2015 before becoming the club’s captain by Mark Applegarth ahead of the 2023 campaign.

“Along the way, the St.Helens-born forward has made a big impact on the club, both on and off the field, making over 180 appearances in Red, White & Blue, scoring over 35 tries in the process.

“It hasn’t just been Matty’s on-field performances that have earnt him well-deserved recognition, featuring heavily in the programmes run by the Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation, making sure that the work they do, doesn’t go unnoticed.

“Speaking on being granted his testimonial, Ashurst said, “I’m over the moon to be granted a 12-month testimonial for 2024 heading into what will be my 10th year at Wakefield.

“It’s been an honour to represent this great club over all these years and to continue to do so with a testimonial year will be really special for me and my family.

“I’ve enjoyed all of the time I’ve been here and the support I’ve received has been class, so it makes me really proud to be able to celebrate my time here with a testimonial next season.”
