Ex-Man of Steel confirms testimonial opponent

Former Man of Steel Paul McShane is headed into his testimonial year following an impressive 14 years in the game, with the opponents for the clash now confirmed as Huddersfield Giants.

McShane has been plying his trade at the Jungle for the Tigers since his move there in 2015, arriving following two seasons with local rivals Wakefield Trinity.

Since then he’s gone on to play over 200 games for Cas whilst picking up a handful of England appearances as well.

During his spell at Wheldon Road he of course lifted the Man of Steel trophy in 2020 which in turn led to his England appearances.

For his services to the game the RFL confirmed back in June that he would be granted a testimonial year, and now club Castleford have confirmed when his testimonial match will take place and against who.

It’s been revealed that it will be part of the Tigers’ pre-season with Huddersfield Giants travelling to the Jungle on Sunday 4th February for the game in McShane’s honour.

A statement on the club website read: “Castleford Tigers can confirm that we will take on Huddersfield Giants on Sunday 4th February for Paul McShane’s Testimonial at The Mend-A-Hose Jungle. Kick off will be at 3pm.

“McShane began his career at Leeds Rhinos and rose through the youth ranks before going on to make 63 appearances for the first team. Loan spells at Hull FC, Widnes Vikings, and Hunslet Hawks followed before making the move to Wakefield Trinity.

“Macca linked up with the Tigers in 2015 and has served the Fords with distinction ever since. 2020 saw McShane receive the illustrious Steve Prescott Man of Steel Award as the best player in the Super League competition.

“His performances in a Cas shirt earned him international call-ups in 2021 with Shaun Wane naming him in the England squad to face the Combined Nations All Stars and France in 2021 with the Tigers’ number nine making appearances in both fixtures.”

McShane has also designed a shirt for his testimonial match with them available to order for prices up to £40 in limited numbers.

The club confirmed this in their statement: “Paul’s special testimonial jersey is available to pre-order now and you can order yours by emailing paulmcshanetestimonial@hotmail.com today.”

Meanwhile the hooker himself had shared the news of his shirt on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, showcasing the classy design that fans can get their hands on and that the Tigers will be donning against the Giants in early February.
