Danny Ward reveals he is dead against relegation in Super League

Former Leeds Rhinos star Danny Ward may be a former Super League Champion but he has also suffered relegation at the hands of Wakefield Trinity twice at Castleford Tigers and London Broncos.

In 2006 as a player, his Castleford side headed over to Belle Vue in a game branded as the relegation Grand Final as the Tigers lost and were relegated.

In 2019 as a player London Broncos suffered the same fate at Belle Vue losing in the last game against Trinity.

Tomorrow, Ward has a chance to write those wrongs as he takes charge of Cas against Wakefield in another do or die clash.

However, Ward has been open about not liking relegation: “Well I’m not a fan of promotion and relegation I’ll be honest. I’ve obviously been relegated twice so I’m bound to say that, aren’t I?

“Being involved with London that year and what it could have done for them as a team and them as a game if there’d have been no promotion that year and you could build on something, certainly around your young kids, you can keep your squad together, build for the future in that sense.

“But I get it, it’s an entertainment business as well, in games like this, they sell tickets and games when they’re down to the last one of the season and you’re fighting for promotion and relegation, I understand that aspect of it as well, so I try and keep everybody happy and sit on the fence a little bit.

“When you’re sat at the top it’s great, you can watch other teams get relegated and fight for it, but when you’re in the mix of it it’s not great from your towards financial point of view and the implications of clubs and players and contracts and things like that which most lads, any lad who’s been involved in them can tell you all about as well.

“So yeah, I’m personally not massive on promotion and relegation but I understand why it’s there and the drama and excitement it brings as well.”

The game kicks off at 20:00 tomorrow night and will be shown on Sky Sports.
