“Couldn’t believe it” – Ben Currie shocked at Hull FC red card

It isn’t often that the player on the receiving end of a red card tackle will fight the corner of the sent-off player but that is what Ben Currie has done following last night’s game against Hull FC.

Approaching half-time, Currie carried the ball into contact and new Hull FC signing Nu Brown got spun around in the tackle which caused the pair to make head contact with each other.

In real time the incident seemed like nothing, and on replay it doesn’t look much worse either, however, the accidental contact opened up a cut on Currie’s eye which bled heavily causing the tackle to be checked again.

Upon that viewing, it was adjudged that Brown had made contact with Currie’s head which promoted referee Marcus Griffiths to send the Hull FC man off, to the shock and disgust of rugby league fans across both England and the world.

Griffiths told Brown: “It’s head-on-head contact, it’s forceful and dangerous. There is no mitigation, you’re off!”

The decision has since been labelled a “shambles” and “mind-blowingly bad” by Jon Wilkin whilst England captain, and Warrington Wolves teammate of Ben Currie, has called the incident “embarrassing for our game”.

Currie has also now had his say.

“I didn’t even know it was his head!” – Ben Currie shocked at Hull FC star’s send-off

Hull FC signing Nu Brown sent off

Obviously, with Ben Currie bleeding heavily from his eye he had to head to the dressing room to be patched up meaning that he wasn’t on the field when Brown was sent from the field.

He’s now taken to social media to reveal the shock that he had when he was informed that the Hull FC man had been sent for an early bath.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Curried shared footage of the red card captioned: “Couldn’t believe it when they told me it was a red in the changing room.

“No play acting involved. I didn’t even know it was his head!”

From that testimony you could guess that Currie will be in attendance when Brown inevitably goes to face the Operational Rules Tribunal next week, the Warrington man quite possibly set to try and save his fellow professional from a lengthy ban.

Even if he does it might not save the Hull FC man from a lengthy ban as seen by Liam Watts copping four games for contact with the head, although this incident is even more accidental than that one.
