“An absolute disgrace” – Furious Leeds Rhinos fans call for change

It’s been a Super League weekend for high scores with Wigan Warriors putting up 48 on Friday night, Huddersfield Giants putting 52 on Hull FC and now Leeds Rhinos have been walloped by Catalans Dragons 61-0 in Perpignan.

That huge loss marked a second straight week for Leeds in which they conceded 50 or more, after losing 50-0 to Wigan last week, meaning it’s also the second time in a row that they’ve been nilled.

To think that heading into today the Rhinos could have still made the playoffs as well meaning they had plenty to play for makes the heavy loss all the more frustrating for fans.

The Rhinos have had plenty of injuries and today they saw yet another half-back pairing with Rhyse Martin pairing young Jack Sinfield, with Morgan Gannon moving back into the second-row.

Drama over where Nene Macdonald is continued with the PNG centre missing once again, despite being set to play for his national side in a weeks time in Port Moresby against Australia.

Overall though it was a dismal day in the south of France for Leeds Rhinos fans and they took to social media to express their frustrations and anger with the side.

Rival fans even seemed to feel sorry for Rhinos fans given the huge hammering.

@TruthTalkingMav said: “Jokes aside, a lot of good people, and Drew, have gone over there to support Leeds Rhinos. They deserve better than this. Superleague deserves better than this. Leeds are a massive club & whilst it’s hysterically funny from an oppo fan pov, Leeds Rhinos fans deserve better.”

One Leeds fan @theowlandfleece highlighted just how bad it was for the Headingley club.

“111 unanswered points in two games.
“Worst defeat in super league history
“First time we’ve conceded 50 points in back to back games since 1996 ”
“First time we’ve been nilled in back to back games in the super league era Recruitment barely underway
“Utterly pathetic”
The fight of the players was questioned as well: “An absolute disgrace, it’s on smith, it’s on hethrington, it’s on the players. Down on numbers or not as fans we only ask that you show fight and there’s isn’t any fight in this team what so ever”
One claimed a “full reset” was needed: “There is no way Hetherington and Smith can continue. Full reset is needed. Two weeks in a row this team been destroyed “
That was echoed with calls for a boycott: “Need to boycott games now, hetherington needs forcing out.”
One fan spotted a trend for the team’s final game against Castleford next week: “50 against Wigan, 60 against Catalan… wonder if Cas will get 70 next week…”
