Steve McNamara hints at potential Sam Tomkins position switch

Catalans Dragons are undergoing something of a rebuild at present.

They have let go a number of stars including releasing Dylan Napa on mutual consent and letting Josh Drinkwater leave for Warrington Wolves.

But who will replace Drinkwater with no new signing through the door as of yet in that role.

Head Coach Steve McNamara revealed his options to L’Independant:

“Pearce is our scrum-half. We have Arthur Mourgue, Cesar Rougé, Sam Tomkins and Tryone May, capable of occupying the position alongside him.”

This means England skipper Tomkins could be set for a positional switch in 2023.

He then revealed that the first week in January will see England stars such as Wigan Warriors duo Michael McIlroum and England skipper Sam Tomkins as well as ex-Castleford Tigers man Mike McMeeken return alongside new signing Siosuaia Taukeiaho:

“The three England internationals (Tomkins, McMeeken, McIlorum), Taukeiaho (Tonga) and May (Samoa) will be there. Adam Keighran arrived on Wednesday and begins training with the team on Friday.”

Keighran is a major signing and frees up McNamara to play May in the halves so long as the club secure another centre after missing out on Joey Leilua of Featherstone Rovers.

That said they could trust young player Matthieu Laugerre in the centre moving into 2023 depending on what recruitment brings.
