Two NRL bosses are enjoying very different experiences at present.
Let’s start with the positives, former Wakefield Trinity star Jason Demetriou is set to be rewarded for his brilliant success as South Sydney boss with a new deal.
The versatile Demetriou spent seven seasons at Trinity making nearly 200 appearances or the club before joining Keighley Cougars where he had his first taste of coaching.
Now in the South Sydney hotseat, he had huge shoes to fill after Wayne Bennett left having taken the Bunnies all the way to the Grand Final where they were unlucky to lose to Penrith.
However, Demetriou has done a terrific job even following the exit of star halfback Adam Reynolds. The Rabbitohs are now 160 minutes away from another Grand Final after defeating rivals Sydney last week in the first week of the finals.
Because of this, according to Fox League, Demetriou is set to be awarded with an extension to his deal by one-year though it may be pushed to two according to reports.
He was signed on already for 2023, but now 2024 and 2025 look likely to be under his stewardship.
However, one coach not being given assurance over their future is Des Hasler of the Manly Sea Eagles. It’s been a difficult year for them with recent talks of a rift only compounding matters whilst the talk around Hasler is not helpful either.
Hasler’s future is up in the air with the club happy for him to lead the way in 2023 but have put in place a succession plan which would see a newly appointed assistant coach take over in the near future.
This is despite what was initially a very decent season from the Sea Eagles derailed by the pride jersey debacle and injuries to key players.
NRL 360 host Paul Kent described this as “insulting” to Hasler and it’s widely believed Hasler will quit which Kent believes would see key players such as the Trbojevic brothers leave according to Fox League.
