“Well it…” – Paul Rowley speaks out on Marc Sneyd dropout after defeat to Wigan Warriors

Super League head coach

Late on against the Wigan Warriors, Salford Red Devils led 12-10 but they were forced into a goal line drop out and then the worst happened.

Man of the Match Marc Sneyd, who has had an excellent start to the season, kicked short resulting in an error and a winning try for Wigan Warriors from Jake Wardle.

After the game, Salford Red Devils boss Paul Rowley was asked by Sky Sports if it was the right play.

He said: “Well it wasn’t,” he began before quite rightly adding, “But Sneyd was man of the match and absolutely the right decision best player on the field so we’ve got no dramas.

“You win some, you lose some regarding that and you know he’s been brilliant for us and he continues to be brilliant he was brilliant today he made one bad decision but that’s what happens.”

Asked about Sneyd becoming the club’s all time leading Super League points scorer within the game, Rowley paid a lovely tribute to him.

He said: “I just think he’s authentic he’s not a manufactured player. He’s grown up playing the game he loves and he still plays the game he loves.

“You can see it written all over his face that he loves playing. He wants the ball in his hands and he’s an authentic rugby player. He’s a purist. He’s what rugby’s all about. He’s fantastic.

Asked if we’re seeing the best of him, Rowley added: “Yeah, like I say, he’s certainly enjoying himself. He’s had a distinguished career over at Hull mainly and he’s come back here like a vintage wine I guess. We hear that said a lot. But certainly he’s been fantastic.”

Rowley pays tribute to side after Wigan Warriors defeat

Salford Red Devils coach Paul Rowley told Sky Sports his side deserved more against Leeds Rhinos.

Rowley also paid tribute to his side’s effort: “We put ourselves in a position to win. We should have won the game really. We came down to 12. You know we did we kind of got derailed a little bit probably for the last 10 minutes and lost a little bit of composure there but yeah I mean your point is they don’t let me down and they’re absolutely not.

“They’re a good bunch and we’ve had a lot of adversity this week with illness and injury. Look at our team compared to last week. Whoever comes in just steps up and does a shift. So we’ve got a good group.”

Asked if the scoreline didn’t reflect the game, Rowley said: “Yeah, well they get one at the end. You know, Bevan French does that, doesn’t he? He can be quiet for a game and pop up and he’s going to burn you because he’s got speed so it was a tough game we give ourselves a chance of winning it we’re disappointed we didn’t win it it’s that’s as simple as that for us.”
