“Wait and see” – Major update on Hull KR star’s future as move looms

Hull KR's Matty Storton is tackled by Wigan's Toby King

Hull KR boss Willie Peters has opened up about prop Matty Storton’s future at the club.

Storton, who is out of contract at the end of this season, had been subject to plenty of speculation in the past few weeks.

There has been rumoured interest from Wakefield Trinity this week, and despite currently playing in the Championship, they are a side with plenty of ambition, making this more possible than it might seem at first.

Asked whether he planned to keep the 24-year-old at the club, Peters said: “Of course.

“Matty is a great club man and man to have around the place, but there’s a thing called salary cap and there are some aggressive teams out there with money to spend so we’re going to have to wait and see if we can do anything or not.”

Storton featured in a 30-4 victory for the Robins’ reserve side on Saturday, against Warrington Wolves, but hasn’t featured for the first team since beating Leeds Rhinos in Round Two, being named as 18th man in the last two.

Asked about this, the Rovers boss said: “He’s 18th man so he’s obviously close, but I think the front-rowers are doing a pretty good job at the moment too.

“It’s one of those where you’ve got to keep plugging away. It’s a long season.”

Matty Storton suffered a setback before the season started, picking an elbow injury, and is having to work hard to make his way back into the squad.

He only started two games in the 2023 season, but made 23 appearances from the bench.

Does his future lie at Hull KR?

It seems hard to see how Hull KR keep Storton at the club: Rovers have been retaining plenty of players, with the likes of Sam Luckley and Mikey Lewis recently penning new deals – likely with salary increases to their previous contracts.

Storton’s value will be higher than it was when he signed a deal three years ago, and he’ll also have more choice than when he was a young 21-year-old: he’ll have more influence over the club due to his experience, and will be able to look elsewhere.

Hull KR can’t keep re-signing quality players forever, thanks to the salary cap, and at just 24-years-old and a Super League regular for a number of years, he’ll be in high demand: Wakefield’s interest makes sense, and they may be able to convince him to join them at Belle Vue.

Just as Willie Peters said, we’re going to have to wait and see.
