Further to reports linking Mike McMeeken to Wakefield Trinity, his team-mate Tom Johnstone could also be swapping Catalonia for West Yorkshire.
Winger Tom Johnstone, as originally reported by Rugby League Live, could be returning to Wakefield Trinity after just two years away from the club.
He scored 87 tries in 115 league games for Trinity, earning him a big move to the Dragons, where he scored 27 tries in 28 in his debut season in Perpignan.
French publication L’Indépendant is reporting that he is in ‘advanced negotiations’ with the Championship club, who reportedly were in contact with him and McMeeken before the season even started.
They are out of contract at the end of the season, meaning Powell’s side could snap him up for the 2025 season, with their new millionaire owner Matt Ellis providing some backing.
Can Wakefield sign him?
Wakefield have just signed winger Derrell Olpherts from Leeds Rhinos, announcedyesterday, but that’s a deal that only runs until the end of the season.
With Iain Thornley often out through injury, and Jermaine McGillvary now 35-years-old, there’s certainly space for another winger, and Catalans may struggle to sign players that want big contracts next season.
There’s a good chance that Trinity will be in Super League next year, and they may well be bolstered with a huge signing on the wing.
Tom Johnstone transfer a sign of things to come
This move for Tom Johnstone is a sign of things to come for Wakefield Trinity it would seem.
The money at the club and the clear ambition as well as the appeal of a revamped stadium will lure a number of top targets to the club.
In fact, they have already shown that they have a proven track record in drafting in big names such as Jermaine McGillvary.
Daryl Powell said on Boxing Day after their pre-season clash with Leeds Rhinos that the club were gunning for the top four of Super League in years to come and that certainly seems to be the case and signing Johnstone would be a real signal of intent moving forward and into the 2025 Super League season.
