Three clubs who could sign Warrington Wolves star Josh Drinkwater

Yesterday, reports suggested that Warrington have knocked back several loan enquiries for experienced half-back Josh Drinkwater. He has now revealed that he will leave the Wolves at the end of the season.

Drinkwater was a regular starter in a difficult 2023 season. But he has struggled to break into the side this year. Sam Burgess has preferred the combination of youngster, Leon Hayes, and England captain, George Williams.

Plenty of sides will be interested in snapping up the veteran Aussie, who started his career in the NRL. He was a fan favourite at London Broncos, Leigh Leopards, Catalans Dragons, and Hull KR, before moving to the Wire.

Here are three potential destinations Josh Drinkwater could move to for the remainder of this season, and from 2025 and beyond.

Hull FC

A major rebuild is underway at Hull FC following the departure of ex-coach, Tony Smith. Richie Myler, the new director of rugby, has a long list of tasks to complete. The club are reportedly on the verge of appointing Paul Rowley as head coach. Josh Drinkwater would be a logical first signing of the new era under Rowley.

The Airlie Birds have two quote spots available, following the departures of Tex Hoy and Fa’amanu Brown. He would add experience to a youthful side, and fill the gap left by Brown in the halves.

Bringing Drinkwater to Hull would be a smart piece of business and provide a lift to a struggling side.

Salford Red Devils

Salford’s financial difficulties have seen them lose a number of high-profile players in recent months. The most notable example being Andy Ackers and Brodie Croft’s move to Leeds. Now head coach, Paul Rowley, appears likely to leave, meaning the Red Devils are on the verge of another period of transition.

Marc Sneyd has been hugely important to their strong performances this season. However, his contract expires at the end of the season, and he is yet to agree a new deal. If Sneyd does move on, Drinkwater would be a strong candidate to replace him.

They have a similar style, with strong organisational skills and a good kicking game. Salford do not have a quota spot available for a mid-season move. But Cade Cust, David Nofoaluma and Sam Stone are all out of contract at the end of the season. A spot could become available in 2025 for Drinkwater.

Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield are currently top of the Championship, and have their sights set on a return to Super League. With reports linking them to Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken, they are already building a squad to compete at the top level next season.

This season, Wakefield’s half-back pairing is Luke Gale and Mason Lino. But Luke Gale is now 35. Trinity may decide not to keep him if they return to Super League. His contract expires at the end of the current season and Wakefield have a decision to make.

Head coach Daryl Powell played Drinkwater regularly during his time at Warrington. He has a wealth of experience, which would help Wakefield make the transition back to Super League.

If they decide not to stick with Gale, Drinkwater may be the perfect replacement.
