The 10 names on the Hull FC head coach shortlist, according to Sky Sports

Hull FC candidates

It has been almost a month since Hull FC pulled the trigger and sacked Tony Smith yet the club still remain coachless and with first-choice Paul Rowley having knocked them back.

The rejected offer to Paul Rowley was tabled almost two weeks ago and since then there’s been a lack of tangible candidates with names constantly floated out as options before being dismissed equally as fast.

That was the case with former Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott who had his name thrust into the limelight by Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks. Reporting on The Verdict, Brooks claimed that McDermott was one of two names alongside Lee Briers that she’d heard.

As part of her most recent report live on Sky Sports, Brooks named a shortlist of Hull FC coaching candidates with McDermott among the 11 names but she quickly scratched him off.

Brooks explained: “I’ve been asked to put together a list of possible candidates to replace Tony Smith in charge of Hull FC. This is what I’ve come up with.

“Now, straight away, Brian McDermott, I think it’s safe to scratch his name from the list. I understand he is extremely happy in the NRL.”

Former Hull KR assistant coach and one of McDermott’s star players at Leeds, Danny Maguire, was among the next names on the list and Brooks indicated that Sky will be grilling him over the vacant role next week.

“Danny Maguire is on there as well. Now, he’s going to be our studio guest on Thursday, Brian, no doubt will put the question to him.”

The boldest name on the list then came next as Adrian Lam was referenced with Hull FC’s incredible signing of John Asiata for 2025 noted as the biggest hint for why the Leigh coach could make the switch to Leigh.

Brooks explained: “Adrian Lam. At 3pm, he was not on my list, but with the big news that his star man has pledged his future to the Black and Whites, is that an indication that Lamb, who is off contract at the end of 2024, may be travelling east also in 2025?”

Brian Carney would go on to report that Hull FC had ‘made contact’ with Lam, Carney stating: “Jenna is absolutely right to suggest that Adrian Lam may be at Hull FC next year. I believe an approach has been made.”

Current interim head coach Simon Grix was namechecked too but Brooks was clear, stating: “I’m hearing that Richie Myler is not going to rush this decision.”

Jason Demetriou has just been sacked by Souths, and he is not the most articulate coach you have ever heard. However, he has had to deal with a dysfunctional club management group, and the widespread perception that the th club listens to two of its star players rather than to the coach. Remember – that was the reason that Sam Burgess walked away from the club.

I think he is a competent _technical_ coach, but I’m not convinced he has the _personality_ to turn enthuse a squad and around an underperforming side.
