Super League side loan in young playmaker

Super League

Plenty of loan deals have happened so far in the Super League season and the latest has seen London Broncos bring in young French hooker Ugo Tison from Catalans Dragons.

London have been one of the sides to target the loan market a number of times with previous recruits including Fenton Rogers, Harvey Makin and hooker Reiss Butterworth but it now seems that the Broncos have found another man to play nine.

That man is Catalans Dragons’ hooker Ugo Tison with the 22-year-old also being adept at playing in the halves, therefore adding some much-needed versatility to the club from the capital.

They confirmed the loan deal via social media with an attached statement on their club website.

It read: “London Broncos can announce a deal to sign French hooker Ugo Tison from Catalans Dragons in a temporary deal.

“The 22-year-old who can play as a hooker or in the half positions has made two Super League appearances for Catalans, making his debut against Wigan Warriors in 2022.

“Ugo made his international debut for France in 2023 against England at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and has had loan spells at Toulouse and Wakefield Trinity since signing professional terms with Catalans in 2022.

“Ugo has joined up with the group and is available for the selection for the weekend’s game with Salford Red Devils.”

It’s a savvy pick-up by London and Mike Eccles with the head coach having previously explained that the club are desperate for recruits after being heavily reduced through injury.

Speaking after the Broncos game in Round Seven against Hull KR, Eccles explained the club’s need to make signings.

“It’s been a really really hard week,” Eccles explained after the 50-10 loss.

“We’re down to our last 17 players. If you’re fit, you’re playing. Sheds (assistant coach Ryan Sheridan) was nearly in there, we’re that low on bodies.”

“The first thing is getting some players back. We’re literally down to 17 players, we need some more experienced players back and we’ll hopefully get that.”

The club had intended to re-sign Reiss Butterworth, something that has now been confirmed as not set to happen.

Mike Eccles said previously: “Reiss Butterworth will hopefully come back. He’s been great for us and he’s enjoying his time with us, so I’ll have a conversation with Willie and see what they want to do around that one.”

It would now seem that Hull KR did not want to extend that deal with London confirming that: “Logistics and personal circumstances meant a longer-term deal would have proved difficult.”

London will play Salford Red Devils this week in Super League with details of that game and all other Super League games on TV available here.
