Super League Disciplinary: Challenge Cup sides in anxious wait over fear of bans

Super League Disciplinary

There might not have been any Super League action at the weekend but teams will still be wary of any Super League disciplinary punishment following the Challenge Cup Quarter-Finals.

There were just eight Super League sides in action and in a change, the majority managed to keep 13 men on the field at all times, something that has been a rarity this season.

Despite that, the Super League disciplinary process will still be busy this week with a number of incidents warranting a second look by the Match Review Panel.

Saturday’s games saw Hull KR knock out Challenge Cup holders Leigh whilst Huddersfield Giants sprung a shock on Catalans Dragons in the South of France.

The Hull KR and Leigh Leopards game was a repeat of last year’s final, a game that saw Elliot Minchella sent to the sin bin and face Super League disciplinary retribution.

There were no such issues this weekend with Chris Kendall able to keep his cards in his pocket for the full 80 minutes during Hull KR’s 26-14 win, but that wasn’t the case in Perpignan.

As Catalans fell to a “humiliating” 34-6 defeat to Huddersfield, they saw centre Arthur Romano sent to the sin bin and there will be concerns that he could face punishment.

Onto Sunday and Wigan Warriors handed out a huge loss to Castleford Tigers with Matt Peet’s side scoring 12 tries as they cruised into the semi-finals with a 60-6 win.

Liam Marshall scored four whilst Abbas Miski added two of his own in a game where Wigan ran riot and had it almost all their own way, barring the loss of Willie Isa to injury.

The final game of the quarter-finals pitted St Helens against Warrington Wolves and after a tight first half that Wire edged 7-6, it was dominance in the second half from Sam Burgess’ side.

They scored four tries and had another ruled out as they silenced the St Helens crowd and marched into the semi-finals with a 31-8 victory.

A cracking weekend of Challenge Cup action, but will there be any sides holding Super League disciplinary concerns?

Naturally, the focus will surround Romano because he was the sole player to be sent to the sin bin this week but Catalans can ill-afford a suspension with the Dragons down on numbers in their outside backs, still awaiting a return for Tom Johnstone after his HIA.

Other notable incidents that went unpunished on the field were few and far between and for once the Match Review Panel could have a quiet week.
