Star player red carded after allegedly biting opponent

Women’s rugby league is on the up as we saw with amazing Challenge Cup semi-finals between Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors and St Helens and York which have set up a fantastic final at Wembley as part of a triple header alongside the men’s final and the 1895 Cup Final in August.

The Super League season is also delicately poised with St Helens, York and reigning Champions Leeds battling it out to be crowned Champions as the league gets more competitive by the year.

In a bitter sweet development we have also seen some of the British game’s best join NRLW clubs which is currently the pinnacle for a player.

This was emphasised by the amazing quality we saw from the Jillaroos in the World Cup Final as they devastated the brilliant New Zealand Ferns who had comfortably beaten England in the semi-finals.

So it is both a good thing and a bad thing to see the top Super League stars try their hand down under.

We have also seen the game move forward with some clubs paying their players on Britain now as the sport truly begins to develop.

However, the women’s game has been hit by a touch of controversy down under.

Brisbane Broncos winger Ash Werner was sent off in the first round of the NRLW for biting.

Werner was given her marching orders for allegedly biting a Roosters opponent Jayme Fressard during her team’s 36-18 loss.

The incident is set to be reviewed by the disciplinary panel.

Meanwhile the Broncos have vowed to defend the player according to Australian journalist The Mole in the Wide World of Sport.

“She’s a lovely lady, we’ll be supporting her,” chief executive Dave Donaghy told Wide World of Sports.

She is certainly a high profile player in the game being a former Olympian.
