St Helens fans question why eight point try wasn’t awarded last night

Recently we have seen an increase in the number of eight point tries awarded in Super League.

Traditionally, eight point tries are a rare occurence.

They are only awarded when a player is fouled in the act of scoring meaning that they were very rarely awarded.

However, in Round Three Warrington Wolves were given two in one game against Salford Red Devils.

The first was given because of Tyler Dupree’s knees going into Josh Thewlis as he scored whilst the second was due to Kallum Watkins accidentally catching Matt Dufty on the head as he desperately looked to stop the fullback scoring.

A week later Salford themselves were given an eight point try against Hull FC as they won 60-14.

However, one side who hasn’t had one recently is Champions St Helens.

After their loss to Leeds Rhinos, Phil Clarke suggested that the Saints should have had an eight point try when Mark Percival miraculously grounded the ball despite a tackle from Nene MacDonald.

MacDonald seemed to catch Percival high and though a penalty try was checked in case Percival had dropped the ball, no eight point try was given.

Meanwhile, after last night’s win over Hull FC, Saints fans questioned why their last try, which went to Jon Bennison, wasn’t given as an eight point try with Bennison copping a stray knee as he scored.
