Sam Burgess puts in offer to sign NRL superstar for Warrington Wolves

In one of the major shocks of the year, Warrington Wolves have elected to replace former Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers boss Daryl Powell with Sam Burgess in a bit of a gamble given that it is his very first head coach role.

However, there is a lot of upside to appointing Burgess including the character and leadership skills he displayed during his time as a player becoming perhaps the best forward on the planet at South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he is now assistant coach.

Burgess built up a lot of respect in the NRL which gives him pulling power where transfers are concerned enabling him to draft in some of Australia’s biggest stars for the Wolves which is why he has reportedly made an offer to sign Melbourne Storm star Justin Olam.

Olam in the past has been brilliant but with injuries in 2023 he has struggled for game time and form.

Burgess is trying to exploit this by making an offer for the centre but it seems Olam is willing to see out his contract till 2026.

Burgess will join the Wire for the 2024 Super League season having agreed a two-year contract.

Following his retirement from a decorated playing career in 2019, Burgess has transitioned into the coaching set-up at South Sydney Rabbitohs, currently working as an Assistant Coach for the NRL side.

Burgess is one of the most renowned and respected leaders in the global game. The former England captain famously led the Rabbitohs to the 2014 NRL title, being awarded the Clive Churchill Medal despite suffering a broken cheekbone in the opening minute.

He represented England and Great Britain on 26 occasions during his playing career and captained the national team to the World Cup Final in 2017 under the stewardship of Wayne Bennett.
