Salford Red Devils star reportedly set to join Super League rivals

Salford Red Devils star and Catalans target Oliver Partington playing against Leeds Rhinos

Salford Red Devils star Oli Partington could be on his way to Catalans Dragons, according to Jenna Brooks on Sky Sports.

This was originally reported by Rugby League Live, the forward could be on his way across the Channel. Now that the reports are coming from two places, it seems almost certain that Partington will be headed that way.

Sam Tomkins also had a laugh about it as the Catalans official appeared on Sky Sports as Brooks reported the news. He joked: “It’s nothing to do with me.”

With Mike McMeeken, the England forward, reportedly on his way to Wakefield Trinity, Partington could be the perfect replacement for the England international.

The 25-year-old made 92 Super League appearances for Wigan Warriors, and may be in contention for the next England squad.

Partington may be joined in 2025 by St Helens winger Tommy Makinson, in what would be another statement signing for the Catalan side.

Overall, the forward has made 106 Super League appearances in his career, and would bring plenty of experience to the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Salford are however believed to have offered Partington a new contract amidst interest from elsewhere.

Our verdict

Hull KR v Salford Red Devils - Sewell Group Craven Park, Hull, England - Salford Red Devils Oliver Partington is tackled by Hull KR s Matt Parcell

Salford are trying to extend a low of contracts recently, but with the salary cap, they can only do this for so long.

If the Dragons do lose as many players as we expect them to, they’ll have plenty of space in the cap for new players – and Partington would be a fantastic replacement if McMeeken leaves.

Catalans are always an attractive side, with Perpignan a new way of life for those that sign.

This deal may well happen. It would be yet another blow to the Salford Red Devils but a major signing for the Catalans Dragons.

However, if Salford Red Devils have shown us time and again and especially in 2024 after the departures of Andy Ackers and Brodie Croft, they continue to impress at the very top of the league defeating St Helens and coming very close to defeating Leeds Rhinos as well as Super League and World Champions the Wigan Warriors.

But can they do it again should Partington leave?
