Salford Red Devils prop King Vuniyayawa has been shown a red card during their game against London Broncos at Plough Lane.

With Salford in control at 12-4 as the game headed towards the final quarter, Vuniyayawa was sent off after a video referee review for dangerous contact in a tackle.

London forward Marcus Stock was seemingly held by two defenders, before Vuniyayawa needlessly came in and put Stock in a dangerous position with the Broncos player landing on his head.

Referee Aaron Moore produced the red card for Vuniyayawa after a video referee review, with the replays doing the Salford prop no favours.

Under the current laws of the game, Stock was in no position to defend himself as he was held upright in the tackle before the Fijian came in and went under his legs.

That saw Stock tipped upside down, with his head crashing into the ground and putting him into a dangerous position – leaving the officials with no choice but to send Vuniyayawa from the field.

The tackle from Vuniyayawa was careless more than anything, with his only saving grace when the incident is reviewed by the disciplinary panel this week being that there was no malice.

That being said, he will undoubtedly be sitting the next week or two out with the authorities determined to stamp out these sort of tackles that leave players at serious risk of head injuries.

Once upon a time, it was a tackle that would have simply just resulted in a penalty with no card, but now given the emphasis on player safety and under the current rules, it is a red card.

It’s a blow for Paul Rowley and Salford who have some tough games coming up and they will now be lighter in the pack without the presence of Vuniyayawa.

Another possible blow for Salford Red Devils could come if Paul Rowley exits to head to Hull FC, as Brian Carney of Sky Sports suggested is a possibility, last night
