Round Five Super League Predictions: Two huge teams set for shock defeats

Salford Red Devils' Brodie Croft and Marc Sneyd celebrate.

Round Four of the Super League threw out some big surprises, with St Helens losing to Salford, and Warrington inflicted a defeat on Hull KR, contrary to our predictions.

We’ve got another full round of Super League action this week, live on Sky Sports.

Salford Red Devils host the Wigan Warriors on Thursday night in a huge game at the top of the table, and on Friday night, St Helens travel to West Yorkshire for a big test against the in-form Leeds Rhinos.

Saturday afternoon offers up three games, with Huddersfield Giants v Hull KR, Hull FC v Leigh Leopards and Catalans Dragons v Castleford Tigers in store, before another Sunday fixture at Plough Lane rounds the week off as the London Broncos host Warrington Wolves.

Below are Serious About Rugby League’s Round Five Super League Predictions.

Super League Predictions

Wigan's Jake Wardle after his try against Penrith

Salford Red Devils v Wigan Warriors

This is a huge game for two of the league’s in-form sides. Salford are coming off the back of impressive victories against St Helens and Hull KR, and Marc Sneyd’s 100% conversion record this season could be crucial in this one!

Meanwhile, Wigan put 60 points past the London Broncos, despite a scare in the start of the second half, being pulled back to 16-22. They’ve been playing catch-up due to missing a round thanks to the World Club Challenge, but with St Helens losing their first game of the season, the Warriors will be looking to head to the top of the table.

Contrary to most predictions, we think Salford may be in with a chance here. They’re more than capable of going toe-to-toe against top sides, and even when not at their best, the Red Devils have been on the right side of the results more often than not.

Verdict: Salford Red Devils 24-12 Wigan Warriors

Leeds Rhinos v St Helens

We’re back at the top of the table, and Leeds Rhinos look close to their former glory this season. Ash Handley and Brodie Croft are spear-heading a strong season for the Rhinos, and their blistering attack has meant they’ve provided some of Super League’s best tries in 2024.

St Helens showed that they’re fallible last weekend. They looked to be heading to a victory against Salford, but after Mark Percival’s red card, they collapsed and lost 24-20 – their first home loss to the Red Devils for 44 years.

Leeds Rhinos could hit Saints hard in this game, and we’re predicting an entertaining draw.

Verdict: Leeds Rhinos 16-16 St Helens

Huddersfield Giants v Hull KR

Huddersfield scored 50 points away at Wheldon Road, but that was a really poor Castleford side. The Giants have shown signs of quality this season, but they’re also capable of a poor performance.

The Robins started well, but seem to be dropping off recently: a tight loss to Warrington will have been disappointing, but the loss to Salford was against a really strong team.

We think Rovers will be back in the winning column this week – they should prove too strong, despite the confidence the Giants will have from their win.

Verdict: Huddersfield Giants 6-18 Hull KR

Hull FC v Leigh Leopards

It’s hard to describe Hull FC as anything but one of the weakest sides in this league. They put up a good fight against Catalans Dragons this weekend, but they keep coming up short.

Leigh have also had a poor start to the season. They may have finished fourth last year, but they are one of three sides in the league that are without a win this season, and their off-the-field presence will have done little to appease fans of the Leopards. However, they looked promising against Leeds Rhinos, and we all know what their potential is as a side.

Leigh should get points on the board here, and Hull will need to bring their A-game if they are to get anything from this game.

Verdict: Hull FC 8-18 Leigh Leopards

Adam Keighran who made the transfer from Catalans Dragons to Wigan Warriors

Catalans Dragons v Castleford Tigers

The Dragons are coming into their own this year, and Jayden Nikorima’s try after just 36 seconds vs Hull FC showed their class – they look strong from the first to the last.

This couldn’t be more different for Craig Lingard’s side, and early-season promise was dashed with an embarrassing performance, losing 50-8 at home.

Catalans, barring a miracle, will win comfortably in Perpignan, and surely most predictions will be the same.

Verdict: Catalans Dragons 36-10 Castleford Tigers

London Broncos v Warrington Wolves

The Wimbledon crowd briefly looked to be in with a chance of a surprise when the Broncos came close to Wigan Warriors at the weekend, and despite a really poor start to the season, they’ve been improving week by week.

The Wire haven’t lost since Round One – big wins against Hull FC and Castleford Tigers could’ve been put down to poor opposition, but beating Hull KR this weekend shows that they coud be the real deal. Even without George Williams, they looked strong, but with him back, they may be able to go up a notch.

The Broncos may well come close here, but Warrington should take the win home.

Verdict: London Broncos 12-20 Warrington Wolves
