Leigh Leopards make decision on final quota spot with forward given contract

Quota spots are vitally important to every Super League club but going into the 2024 only a number of clubs still have any of their quota spots available.

St Helens are perhaps the most noteworthy side to have a quota spot open. This comes after Will Hopoate left the club at the end of 2023 and they have left his number three shirt vacant, likely to be used to sign a new centre who will take up the final overseas quota spot.

The Saints have been linked to Justin Olam but the club have been open about wanting to take their time in terms of recruitment. They could very well make a move for Curtis Scott after he has been turned down in the NRL.

Scott could also be a target for Catalans Dragons. They have one quota spot open as well but are likely to utilise that on a halfback such as Anthony Milford.

There is another club who could have a quota spot open in the shape of Leigh Leopards. They used up their sixth spot on Matt Moylan to partner Lachlan Lam after Ben Reynolds left the club.

This could very well be their last signing but there is some confusion over the future of Ben Nakubuwai. His contract length is unclear so it is unknown if he was contracted to the club for the 2024 season, if he wasn’t then the club would have an open quota spot that they could use to sign someone like Scott for next year.

However, Serious About Rugby League understands that the prop is set to be at Leigh in 2024 with the forward contracted to the end of next year.

This means that the Leopards have finished in terms of recruitment for the 2024 season or at least in terms of overseas signings. The Leopards have done a terrific job in developing the squad which got the club into the play-offs last year and won the Challenge Cup Final against Hull KR.

Derek Beaumont meanwhile made it clear that he is showing ambition when talking about IMG believing that there isn’t enough incentive for clubs to show ambition.
