Leeds Rhinos suffer another devastating injury blow

Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith

Leeds Rhinos produced an improved performance in their victory over London Broncos at the weekend. Head coach, Rohan Smith, came under criticism after a turgid performance in victory over Hull FC. The Rhinos’ win over London helped to ease some of the pressure.

However, after dropping Matt Frawley for youngster Jack Sinfield, Leeds looked more coherent in attack. Back-to-back victories has lifted the Rhinos to seventh place. They are now just two points off top spot, with the leading pack all tied on 14 points.

Leeds are suffering from a number of injuries to key personnel though. Harry Newman, Paul Momirovski and David Fusitu’a were all missing from the back line last weekend. Tom Holroyd, James Bentley, and Morgan Gannon are also missing, all of whom have head injuries.

The Rhinos lost two more key players to injury during the London match. Smith has now provided an update on their fitness ahead of their game with Catalans Dragons this weekend.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Smith confirmed that Riley Lumb faces a long layoff.  The youngster limped off early against the Bronocs and has suffered a serious injury.

“He’s done a decent hamstring,” said Leeds boss Smith. “He’s going to see a consultant to see whether surgery will be required but it’ll be a lengthy layoff either way.”

Smith stated that the Rhinos would be doing everything they could to support Lumb through his injury.

“[It’s] disappointing for sure because he showed us what he could do, not only in the whole match but in the pre-season and in the training to start the season.

“He’s been really going well. So, we’re disappointed for him but we’ll support him. He’s a kid that understands. It’s a long game as well. So, it’s a bump in the road, but he’ll be back for sure.”

He also confirmed that Paul Momirovski faces up to six weeks out, but is recovering well.

Leeds without injured Brodie Croft

Brodie Croft was playing a starring role in the victory over London, before limping off. Smith has confirmed that Croft faces a spell on the sidelines.

However, his injury is not as serious as Lumb’s and he will be back in the Leeds side in a matter of weeks.

“Brodie has a minor groin issue that’ll keep him out of this weekend’s game, but most likely he will return after the break.”

As a result of Croft’s injury, Sinfield will retain his place in the side, after a starring role against London. Smith confirmed Frawley will also return to the side. Smith stated that Frawley has been working hard to improve on his game.

“Matt was clearly disappointed [when he was dropped] but he’s an outstanding pro and an outstanding person. He’s been through situations,” Smith said, “He handled it really well.”

“He took on some thoughts around some things I thought he needed to work on and a chance to freshen up mentally a little bit as well to come in flying this week. He’s been great the last couple of days.”
