Following Warrington Wolves’ stunning victory over St Helens in the Challenge Cup, George Williams has been branded the “best defensive half” in Super League.

Wire beat St Helens 31-8 at the Totally Wicked Stadium, making it through to the final four of the Challenge Cup at the weekend.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Williams said about his side’s performance: “Yeah, it was a good performance. I think it was in that balance there for a fair amount of time.

“It was probably a good game to watch, it was tough out there.

“It’s really pleasing to just come home strong in the end. That’s a great win for us, St Helens are a top team.

“I think that defence was probably the most pleasing thing. I think that’s something that we worked hard on in the off-season. They’re a good team, got strike all over the pitch and we nullified a lot of it so I’m happy with that.”

On winger Matty Ashton, who scored a remarkable try in the match, he added: “He’s brilliant, he’s been really good, he’s getting better and better each year so some finish in the end though.”

Warrington will play Huddersfield Giants in their bid to make it to the final at Wembley, and on the draw, Williams said: “Yeah, that will be great.

“They beat Catalans pretty convincingly yesterday so that’ll be a great tie.

“I look forward to that one.”

Kevin Brown, who previously played for Warrington Wolves, was part of the BBC punditry team that covered the game.

Speaking about Williams after the game, he said: “He’s a superstar on both sides of the world.

“He’s developed his game over the last few years from being one that’s just stuck on the left edge and now he’ll play all over the field.

“He’s a leader and he’s now the captain of the country.

“He’s so difficult to defend against because of the variation of attack. Whether he’s passing, running or kicking the ball, he’s one of the very best at all three.

“It’s not only when he has the ball.

“Without the ball, George Williams is physical for a halfback and in my opinion, he’s the best defensive half in the competition.”

Williams has made 87 tackles in 2024 so far, with 10 missed tackles.
