Lee Briers “ready to be a head coach”, amid Hull FC links

Lee Briers has been linked with Hull FC

Lee Briers is a man in demand, with Hull FC reportedly interested in bringing him back to Super League. In a glittering playing career, he represented St Helens, Warrington and Great Britain. He also lifted the Challenge Cup in 2010 and 2012 with his beloved Wolves where he became a club legend.

Briers is currently working as an assistant coach in the NRL, with the Brisbane Broncos. Briers started his coaching career at Warrington before moving to Wigan Warriors in 2021.

He was part of the coaching staff for Wigan’s 2022 Challenge Cup win, before moving to Brisbane.

Hull FC linked Briers “ready to be head coach”

Earlier this week, Salford coach, Paul Rowley, turned down an offer to take over at Hull. Now, Briers is a candidate to take over the vacant head coach’s position at the MKM Stadium. Speaking to the BBC, Briers explained his ambition to move into a head coaching position.

“I’m ready now, I’m ready to be a head coach if that’s now or in a few years’ time. I love it at the Broncos and I’m learning how to manage.”

Briers described how his experience at the Broncos has helped him to grow. He believes it has given him the skills to succeed as a head coach.

“I know how to coach rugby league but the key being any boss in any environment is the man management of your staff and the people you employ so I’m learning loads about that.

“The job has to fit me, I’m not going to walk into any job. It’s got to be the right one because at the moment I’m in the best place to learn.”

Opportunity has to be right

However, for Briers, the opportunity needs to be right. He is willing to wait for the right club, whether that is in the NRL or in the Super League.

“With coaching, there aren’t many jobs out there, but my ambition is to be a head coach whether that be in the NRL or Super League,

“All I can keep doing is getting that experience and wait until that job comes. I’m not in a rush, I could be an assistant for the rest of my life.

“There are a lot of big stars in the NRL, it’s a different beast so you are dealing with a different type of player. With superstars come egos and there are different things you’ve got to manage.”

With the Hull FC job now available, a rare opportunity to coach in Super League is available. Briers has to decide if this is the right opportunity for him.
