Ex-Leeds Rhinos and Salford Red Devils halfback Robert Lui linked with stunning move

Robert Lui will be fondly remembered on UK shores at two clubs – Salford Red Devils and Leeds Rhinos.

But, having returned to Australia at the end of the 2021 season, he is now currently plying his trade for the Townsville Blackhawks – the feeder team for the North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL.

However, The Mole at the World Wide of Sports had previously revealed that there could be a huge move on the horizon for the former Leeds Rhinos and Salford Red Devils halfback.

Lui, who only returned to Australia at the end of the 2021 Super League season following six seasons in the UK, was being watched by Gold Coast Titans head coach Justin Holbrook, according to The Mole.

With Gold Coast struggling in the halves as AJ Brimson and Toby Sexton misfire so far, The Mole believed that Lui could have made the big switch.

Lui had also been touted as a possible mid-season recruit for Canterbury Bulldogs in a bid to help the struggling side for the time being.

The Bulldogs started the season in horrendous fashion under former boss Trent Barrett, sitting bottom of the NRL ladder with just two wins to their name before Mick Potter was appointed as interim coach until the end of the season.

Now, though, it is the potential link to the Titans which has resurfaced given the lack of fluidity in the halves for Justin Holbrook’s men.

The likes of AJ Brimson and Toby Sexton have found the going tough in 2022 so far and it wouldn’t be a shock to see Lui being given another shot in the NRL to help the Gold Coast on a short-term basis.

Lui, who played for the Cowboys and Wests Tigers for eight seasons before leaving for the UK, became a cult hero at Salford where he made over 100 appearances.

A loan move to Leeds came about in 2019 before that was made permanent, but injuries blighted his time at Headingley. However, the halfback is still fondly remembered on the terraces at the West Yorkshire club, helping the Rhinos to a Challenge Cup success in 2020.
