There are a few high profile free agents knocking around including star fullback Caleb Aekins.
The fullback shone at Leigh this season scoring tries for fun including a love score in the Grand Final win over Batley at Leigh Sports Village which secured Leigh’s promotion to Super League.
However, he won’t be a part of their new era with the fullback not included in their 2023 squad when it was unveiled during the club’s rebrand as Leigh Leopards.
So, where next for the Wales fullback? Here’s three potential Super League destinations for him.
Wakefield Trinity
No club has as much room in terms of cap space and quota spots as Wakefield Trinity. Expected to sign Kevin Proctor to a “very lucrative deal” Trinity will use some of that with his arrival but would still have space enough for Aekins. With a move for Jamie Shual on hold after his impressive loan spell at the club last year, perhaps Aekins is the way to go.
Catalans Dragons
Like Wakefield, Catalans could have plenty of room to make moves with Josh Drinkwater and Dylan Napa told they can leave the club. Fullback may seem like the last place they need to recruit but with with the club needing backs, this would be a smart signing. Especially as it would enable Arthur Mourgue to become more of a halfback as he is for France and allow Tyrone May to become a go to option at centre.
Leeds Rhinos
The Rhinos have used up their quota spots but it is rumoured that there’s still plenty of reshuffling to be had at Headingley which could see them open up a quota spot. Again, centre would have to be the priority but after losing Jack Walker and Zak Hardaker – who relaces Aekins at Leigh – perhaps Aekins would be a good place to add depth to that position once again although they have signed Luke Hooley for next year already. Despite that, they were still keen on keeping Hardaker and therefore could be keen on Aekins too.
