Hull KR have confirmed that Danny McGuire will be the head coach of the club’s reserve side in 2022 whilst continuing with his first-team duties as assistant coach.
McGuire takes the reins of the Robins reserves after the competition was cancelled due to Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021.
In the new year, the side will give players on the fringe of the first team a chance to impress with the aim of breaking into the club’s Super League side while helping younger players develop in a step-up from academy rugby.
The return of the club’s reserves in 2022 will see a combination of first-team players, part-time reserve signings and players from dual-registration partner, Dewsbury Rams line up for the Robins.
Former Robin and current first-team assistant coach, Danny Maguire can’t wait to get started with the side: “I’m excited. I suppose it’s my first challenge as a coach. It will be really good and I feel there were some missed opportunities for some players last year.
“It gives lads aged 19-20 the opportunity to play regular rugby league. I’ve always been a big backer of the Academy – I love to see young, local players come through the system and get opportunities.”
“We’ve got a lot of players putting pressure on some of our senior players and they get a chance to express themselves regularly (with the reserves), it will be a good challenge for them.”
Since McGuire joined the coaching staff alongside the man who helped form him into the star player he was, Tony Smith, Hull KR’s attack has evolved into one of the best in the league and McGuire will be hoping to bring a similar exciting style to the club’s reserves in 2022.
