After the tenure of former Super League Champion Danny Ward in the London Broncos hot seat came to an end, the main question in the capital has been who will take over in London?
Ward, son of Leeds legend David Ward, guided the Broncos to Super League in 2018 and very nearly ensured their survival in 2019 but things haven’t gone according to plan since their relegation back to the Championship culminating in Ward’s departure.
Now, after months of waiting, a permanent appointment has been found in the shape of current London Skolars and Jamaica national team Head Coach Jermaine Coleman. His attention to detail, his desire to create a winning culture by driving high standards and his wide-ranging knowledge of all levels of rugby league in the south drove the decision.
In fact, London’s owner David Hughes couldn’t speak highly enough of Coleman when talking to the club’s website: ““As we enter this period of change for the London Broncos it was vital that we found the right coach to lead our squad of young players into the Betfred Championship for 2022 and I feel that we have found the ideal man in Jermaine.
“He interviewed outstandingly and has left myself and Jason with no doubt he will use his knowledge of the lower divisions and part time environments to help us create a strong group of players that care passionately about playing for the London Broncos. We will of course give Jermaine all of the support he needs to get the club back on the right track after the disappointment of this season.”
Coleman himself is excited by the opportunity and is eager to see players from the area form the core of London’s future and guide them back to Super League: “I’m very excited to be given the opportunity to work with the London Broncos. We have a fantastic crop of young players who I can’t wait to start working with.
“It’s important to me that we have players who care about the club and want to see it back where we belong in Super league.
“Having players from London playing for London is important to our identity, we need to use that identity to create a winning culture within the group. We must build the club on the right foundations and we start that building project now focussing on developing our own talent and I can’t wait to get started. I’d also like to say thank you to London Skolars for the time I have had them there and wish them every success moving forward.”
