Super League winner released

England international Matty Smith has been released by the Catalans Dragons by mutual consent.

Smith, who has won two Super League titles, signed for the Dragons ahead of the 2019 season.

But he only made 16 appearances in the South of France before being loaned out to Warrington Wolves for the last few weeks of the season.

With the arrival of James Maloney, it is likely Smith would have found game time harder to come by in 2020.

In a short statement on their website, the Dragons said: “Catalans Dragons and Matty Smith have mutually agreed an immediate release from the player’s contract.

“The English scrum half arrived at the club in 2019 and made 16 Super League appearances before joining Warrington on loan.

“The club would like to wish him all the best for the future.”
