Warrington Wolves: NRL club reportedly set to chase Sam Burgess?

Sam Burgess

As South Sydney Rabbitohs struggle there has been speculation they could move to bring back Warrington Wolves Head Coach Sam Burgess back to the club.

There are being questions asked about Souths boss Jason Demetriou who Burgess fell out with at the end of 2023 resulting in an early departure.

But the struggles of the Bunnies to start the season, has raised questions about the former Wakefield Trinity man’s future.

There has been speculation that former England boss Wayne Bennett could return to the club and bring back Sam Burgess as his assistant as Fox League’s Paul Kent said.

Kent said: “Sam comes back as an assistant to Wayne and goes through the same process. Wayne comes back as a head coach, gives Sam two years working under him like he’s doing with Woolf now, like he did with Demetriou before.”

“Then that’s your whole succession plan there, done.”

Now with the defeat of Souths against rivals Sydney Roosters by 48-6 there will be even more questions over Demetriou and even more worries for Warrington Wolves fans over Sam Burgess’ future.

Following the derby, further reports have speculated on Burgess returning to Souths including Wide World of Sports who reported:

“The rumour mill has now entered overdrive regarding a potential return for Wayne Bennett, who is off-contract at the end of this year with the Dolphins, while club icon Sam Burgess could also be back in the mix after early success at Warrington.”

Speaking on Nine’s Today, rugby league great Darren Lockyer admitted the rumours of a return to the red and green for the Englishman are unlikely to stop any time soon.

“Sam was obviously a hero when he played there and he was on the coaching staff [last year],” the former Bronco said.

“He’s gone over to England and he’s performing well there at Warrington.

“Those rumours won’t go away while the Bunnies are struggling.”

That being said, Burgess has repeatedly said he is committed to seeing out his contract at the Halliwell Jones so even if Souths may have this plan in place, it is likely the Warrington Wolves will keep their star coach who has had a terrific start to live at the club.

On top of this, Demetriou himself is determined that he’s the man to lead the Rabbitohs moving forward.

“We can’t look any further ahead than the review and the training this week,” he said after the match to Wide World of Sport.

“It’s disappointing, it hurts and this is probably the lowest point of my career – but I know how we get out of it.

“We don’t want to be in this position, but we need to accept the reality we are in and fight our way out of it. I know the group will get out of it.”

Demetriou also said he has “no doubt” he’s the man to take the Rabbitohs back to form.

“I’ve been with this group for a long time, I understand this group and I’m confident that we’re on the same page and working together,” he said.

“I’ve got no doubt I’m the man to do that, but ultimately what I sit here and say makes no difference.

“The only thing that is going to make a difference is to get our training right, get our performance right next week and get some results on the board.”
