Wales Rugby League confirm sad passing of Gabriel Holt aged 21

Wales Rugby League have confirmed the sad news that one of their Student players Gabriel Holt has passed away aged 21.

The 21-year-old was studying at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and having earned three caps for Wales Students in 2023 he was set to feature in the upcoming Four Nations tournament.

Gabriel Holt didn’t just play for his university and represent Wales Students but he was also playing for amateur side Wigan St Pats, showcasing his strong status in the community game.

It’s been a week that has seen rugby league lose some great people with news earlier confirming that Lord Hoyle, former Warrington Wolves Chairman, had also passed away.

News of Gabriel’s passing was confirmed by Wales Rugby League who shared a statement via their website in which head coach at Wales Students Craig Fisher paid tribute to Holt.

Fisher said: “Lost for words is somewhat of an understatement. No words will ever be able to articulate what an exceptional human being you were. You were a leader, a team-mate, a champion but most of all a friend to everyone you met.

“I feel privileged to have known you and to have coached you. I know how proud you were to wear the red of Wales and were itching to tear into the 2024 Four Nations. As heart-wrenching as it will be that you won’t be with us in person to go to war with us, we will take comfort in knowing that our Angel Gabriel will be with us every step of the way.

“God Speed young man. Forever your coach.”

There has been an online fundraiser created to help pay for the cost of Gabriel’s funeral and more information on how to donate is available here.

That Go Fund Me page has already surpassed £5,500 on the initial target total of £3,000 with a total of 259 donations at the time of writing, once again highlighting how many people Gabriel impacted within his 21 years.

An update on that page confirms comments from the family who are said to be “blown away by the love and respect shown for Gabriel”.

Everyone at Serious About Rugby League wishes our deepest condolence to Gabriel’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
