Richie Myler explains decision to bring Tom Briscoe back to Hull FC

The recruitment drive at Hull FC continued on Tuesday as they confirmed the signing of Tom Briscoe, bringing him back to the club after over a decade away.

The 34-year-old returns on an 18-month contract, with Darnell McIntosh going in the opposite direction as part of the swap deal with Leigh Leopards.

Briscoe will add much-needed experience to a struggling Hull squad, with the winger approaching 400 career games after stints with FC, Leeds Rhinos and the Leopards.

His arrival is part of a mini mid-season overhaul by new Director of Rugby Richie Myler, who was a team-mate of Briscoe’s during their time together at Leeds.

Speaking on the acquisition of Briscoe, and the decision to send McIntosh the other way, it was clear of Myler’s intention to bring experience and a ‘winner’ into the FC ranks.

“We’d like to thank Darnell for everything he has given to the club over the past two-and-a-half seasons, and we wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career with the Leopards,” said Myler.

He continued: “Bringing Tom back to the club where he made his debut was an easy decision for me.
“He’s enjoyed the experience of being in a winning environment over the past decade, and is going to play an integral role in helping develop some of our younger players over the next 18 months.”

Briscoe return makes sense

It’s obvious to most onlookers that the Airlie Birds are lacking leadership and direction on the pitch, something Briscoe can help provide with his vast experience.

Not only that, he’s also still playing very well. Despite being 34, Briscoe was a crucial part of Leigh’s run to Wembley glory last year as he broke the rugby league record for tries at Wembley by an individual player (eight).

His return to Hull will be great for the dressing room, but also great for the team on the field as he no doubt adds quality – Myler recognised this as he elaborated on Briscoe’s return.

“As you can see from his past season-and-a-half at Leigh, he is still performing at a consistently high level every time he takes to the field,” added Myler.

“I know he will relish the opportunity to pull on a Black & White jersey once more and represent the club where he made his name at the beginning of his career.

“We’re excited for Tom to link up with the group over the next few days and begin to share his wealth of knowledge and experience across our young squad.”
