Massive update in the NRL’s attempt to buy Super League

As ever, Sky Sports‘ Jenna Brooks provided her round up of Super League and Ruby League news ahead of Hull KR’s clash with Warrington Wolves in the opening match of Betfred Super League Round Four.

There was lots of good news such as St Helens confirming payment for their women’s team whilst she also gave an assessment of the week’s disciplinary and injury news from Super League.

She said: “Yeah, let’s start with some significant news from the women’s competition. St Helens first team players for the first time this season will receive match payments.

“Of course it’s hugely exciting news for the players and a huge step in the right direction.

“But now to a double injury blow for the Leigh Leopards. They’re going to be without Tom Briscoe and John Asiata for at least the next six weeks. Both players suffering a grade two calf tear last week at St Helens.

“And speaking of that game, we saw John Asiata shown a yellow card for this tackle. Well this week he found out that he faced no further sanctions.

“The same cannot be said for the likes of Leeds Rhinos’ James Bentley from the Huddersfield Giants, Adam Milner, from St Helens, Konrad Harrell and from the Black and Whites, Jack Brown.

“All four players have been suspended for one game.”

Brooks also confirmed that representatives from RL Commercial were present in Vegas for the NRL’s kick-off in America as the prospect of Super League joining the fun looms.

She said: “Now to the NRL. We all know it got underway last week in Vegas, so I can tell you that representatives from Rugby League Commercial were there and held discussions with the NRL.

“While there’s no firm plans set in stone for Super League’s involvement in Vegas next year, I am told that they will continue the discussions next month at the International Federation meeting.”

This also came with a major update about the prospect of the NRL buying Super League as has been reported lately.

She revealed that “no formal discussions” had been held leading Brian Carney to suggest that perhaps “informal talks” had taken place.

Either way, it seems that the RFL is aware of the situation which appears to be very real: “I also spoke to Rugby League Commercial about the speculation surrounding the NRL and their interest in purchasing Super League. I’ve been told that no formal discussions have really taken place as of yet.”
