Leigh Leopards handed major injury boost for Hull KR clash

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has provided an injury update for his team ahead of their Challenge Cup quarter-final against Hull KR.

The Leopards have a rematch of the 2023 Challenge Cup final on the horizon – a game they won 17-16 thanks to Lachlan Lam’s drop goal.

Speaking to the media, he said: “A couple of niggling injuries from last week, but mostly really positive.

“Tom Amone comes back into consideration, so we’ll give him right up until kickoff to be selected, so he’ll be in that 21.

“Apart from that, the other players are starting to run so obviously some you know better signs ahead for the next couple of weeks.”

Amone, who was selected to the Super League Dream Team in 2023, has been out with a foot injury for the past month.

On him, Lam continued: “It’s a decision that we’ll make on Friday just before, in our last run there, so we’ll come up with a bit of a plan and then power on with that.

“It’s just good to see him back around the players after the rehab that he’s done.

“I think his inclusion, if he makes it for this weekend, will be good for the team.”

It had been expected that Amone’s injury would sideline him for far longer than it has done and Lam confirmed that the prop forward was back well ahead of schedule, with Lam stating at the time: “We’ve got the results back after the game and it looks like Tom’s broken a bone in the top of his foot so Tom’s gonna be out for eight weeks plus.”

However, today speaking ahead of Saturday’s game, Lam said: “The initial scan showed a fracture on the foot, but two weeks later, we had a rescan, and it showed there was an old fracture that still was there.

“Luckily, that was the positive news: instead of it being eight weeks it’s been half of that.

“Just some positive news for us at this part of the season.”

Robbie Mulhern has been out with a calf issue, but may also make the Leigh Leopards squad: “He’s a 50-50, Robbie, for this weekend.

“Again, it’s not ideal that one of our senior players is in that position, and he’s played at Hull KR before as well, so he knows what it’s like to go up there and play at that ground.

“We’re going to give him right up until Captain’s Run to see if he’s good to go too.”
