“It’s no secret…” – Hull KR coach on club’s not-so-secret weapon

General view of Hull KR's Craven Park.

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has opened up about the atmosphere at Craven Park ahead of their Challenge Cup quarter-final against Leigh Leopards.

The Robins go into this game hoping to avoid a repeat of the result in last year’s final, where Leigh beat them 17-16 at Wembley Stadium.

Speaking to the media, the Australian spoke about the crowd he anticipated for the game.

“I think there’s 6,000 that were sold already. We’ve had some sellouts, six sellouts so far, in a row and it’d be nice to get another one.

“It’s difficult for fans isn’t it, because they pay for a season ticket and then it’s an additional cost on top of that, so it depends on people’s circumstances of whether they can come.

“I know all our fans would love to be there. Again, it just depends on individual circumstances.

“We know fans that are able to come will come and certainly the ones that aren’t, we know we’ve got their full support.

“So, we’ll get another good crowd regardless this week and they’ll have the same energy.

“It’ll be the same environment for Leigh to come to and that’s what we love. We love playing at home for that reason.”

It’s easy to see why they love playing at home. The Robins have won their last three home games, and atmospheres in East Hull have drawn widespread praise from rugby league fans, and Peters sang the praises of his club’s supporters.

He said: “It’s no secret that teams know what they’re in for when they turn up to Craven Park.

“When I first arrived, we spoke about our home ground and what it means to us to play here, and what performance the players want to put on for our fans, and we want to be consistent with that.

“I’m proud of the players and what they’ve done around that because, yes, we’ve had the results at home – but it’s the way we’ve played.

“We’ve got a style now – I believe a person might come to the game a couple of times, and they can see a difference if there is a big shift in our performance.

“They see it, they understand, and they can see how we want to play. I think that’s important for fans so they’re connected to our team.

“Without getting ahead of ourselves, we’re certainly in a strong position as to who we are as a team, but you need to keep doing that every week.

“You can’t think that there’s no end to success.

We haven’t won anything. We haven’t won a trophy.

“We’re striving to do all that, but what we can control is, like you say, what we do at home, the performances that we put in, and being consistent with that.

“Teams come here now knowing it’s going to be a tough ask. It’s a hostile environment that we’ve got and our players love playing here but we need to go do it again.”
