Hull FC hit for 50 again as Huddersfield Giants humiliate them

Hull FC head coach Tony Smith

It’s another week and another heavy Hull FC defeat with the Black and Whites crashing out of the Challenge Cup at the hands of Huddersfield Giants today.

FC opened up the new Super League season when they hosted rivals Hull KR and that 22-0 defeat looks to have been an omen of what was to come in this 2024 campaign, Tony Smith’s side since losing four of their five fixtures.

The sole win during that period was a last-gasp win against newly-promoted London Broncos and even then boos rang out around the MKM Stadium as fans showed their discontent.

Their worst performance came against an injury-riddled Leigh side last week when they were hammered 54-6 and today wasn’t much better on the road in the Cup with Huddersfield easing to a 50-6 victory.

Earlier in the week Tony Smith had spoken about his credentials for the job but they’ll be coming into question once again following today’s loss as the pressure ramps up ahead of the derby on Good Friday.

Faith was placed in young playmaker Jack Charles as he partnered Morgan Smith in the halves which allowed Kiwi international Fa’anamu Brown to return to his more natural position of hooker.

The highly sought-after Cam Scott started in the second-row but both Jack Ashworth and Franklin Pele were missing from the pack due to suspensions.

Slow starts have been an issue for Hull FC this season and today was no better with Huddersfield opening their account after just three minutes when Tui Lolohea was able to collect Jake Connor’s kick unchallenged before kicking on for Sam Halsall to score in the corner.

The lead was extended when Kevin Naiqama scored after just ten minutes and it could have got worse if Jack Murchie’s pass to Tui Lolohea wasn’t deemed forward to rule out a third try in 15 minutes.

Building from a Morgan Smith 40/20 kick, Hull FC did hit back through Jordan Lane as he barged over from short range but less than ten minutes later the Giants restored their two-try lead.

Sam Halsall scored again after Liam Tindall failed to collect a grubber kick and matters were then made worse when Ligi Sao was sin-binned for a late shot.

Huddersfield capitalised on the man advantage with former Hull FC flyer Adam Swift scoring on the left to put the Giants in a comfortable 20-6 lead at halftime.

Jack Brown went close shortly after the break but Swift continued to pile the misery on by scoring another against his former club, Huddersfield’s poor goal kicking making the score look slightly more favourable to Tony Smith’s side.

Hull tried to force the play as they aimed to overcome the deficit but Sam Halsall smartly intercepted and ran the length of the field to complete his hat trick which Tui Lolohea slotted over to make it 30-6 just after the hour mark.

Minutes later Adam Swift then scored his third to register a hattrick against his former club and condemn Hull FC fans to another miserable afternoon.

Somehow it managed to get worse though as Harvey Livett, Kevin Naiqama and Adam Swift all scored in the final five minutes, Naiqama adding his second and Swift his fourth, to dump Hull FC out of the Challenge Cup by a score of 50-6.

It marked the second consecutive week that Hull FC allowed the half-century of points in whilst only scoring one themselves and with rivals Hull KR up next after winning 40-0 against Saford, Good Friday could be very messy for the Black and Whites.
