Huge rugby league star set for stunning move to rugby union

Sydney Roosters star and New Zealand international as well as Golden Boot winner in 2022 Joseph Manu is set for a sensation move to rugby union as per reports.

The fullback, who plays centre for the Roosters due to the presence of James Tedesco at the club, is set to agree a $1.5 million move to Japan but only on a short term deal that will see him return to Sydney in 2026.

The report explains as such: “According to News Corp, the 27-year-old is said to be considering an overseas move to the 15-man game, where he could earn close to $1.5 million per year in Japan.

“Manu’s contract with the Roosters is set to come to an end at the conclusion of the 2024 season, with NRL rivals, and the Roosters, now facing competition to secure the signature of the 2022 Golden Boot winner.

“While the Tricolours are continuing talks with Manu over a new deal, a renewed contract could still allow the versatile star a year away from the club playing rugby union in Japan, with Manu a chance of returning after 12 months in the competing code.

“Manu would then return down under and rejoin the Roosters on a multi-year deal, likely from 2026.”

The Roosters recently announced that Naufahu Whyte has signed a two-year extension which will keep him with the Tricolours until at least the end of 2026.

The 21-year-old second rower has impressed with his physicality and toughness since joining the Club as a teenager and Roosters Head of recruitment, Daniel Anderson, was pleased to have Whyte extend.

“It’s been terrific to watch Fahu’s growth within our squad over the last few years. He’s a hard worker and a good person, and his best footy is ahead of him, so it’s great to have him locked into the Club’s long-term plans,” said Anderson.

Speaking of his extension, Whyte said: “I was a teenager when I moved over from Auckland and the Roosters has become my home away from home. It’s a blessing to be at this Club and I’m keen to keep working hard, learning from Trent and the senior boys and building my career here.”

Player number 1205, Whyte made eight NRL appearances in 2023 and has played 11 first grade games since making his debut with the Club in the back end of the 2021 season.

Recognised as one of the game’s up-and-coming forwards, Whyte was named in the New Zealand Kiwis squad for The Pacific Championships which were contested last October.
