Reports: Leigh Leopards exit could lead to huge signing

Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont has financed the club and built yet another very strong squad for 2024.

Following reports that Ben Nakubwai from Leigh Leopards could be set to move to Castleford Tigers, it looks like the move could cause a domino effect.

Castleford Tigers are in dire need of reinforcements, as they’re currently going through an injury crisis.

Head coach Craig Lingard was only able to name a 19, rather than 21, man squad for their Challenge Cup tie against Wigan at the weekend.

Following on from the announcement that winger Louis Senior has joined the club in a loan move, joining brother Innes, it looks like Nakubwai will be going the same way with reports from Love Rugby League indicating that the Fijian might make the move.

The Tigers have no quota spots available, so would have to release an overseas player to make it possible, with Albert Vete the most likely candidate.

Nakubwai heading to Wheldon Road would finally free up an overseas spot for Leigh, meaning they could dip their toes into the market themselves.

The Leopards’ own injury problems meant they needed numbers, but now that key players are back fit, they can let Nakubwai leave after two years at the club.

This would then likely allow Leigh to make a move for David Armstrong, who has, reportedly, long been on their radar.

He will have moved up their radar following the news that Gareth O’Brien has been ruled out for six weeks through injury.

Armstrong can play both at full-back and on the wing, and is currently on the books of NRL side Newcastle Knights.

He scored 15 tries in 18 games in the NSW Cup last season, and the 23-year-old is only contracted with the Knights until the end of the 2024 season.

The signing could prove some consolation for the Leopards’ failed attempt to sign Tristan Sailor from Brisbane Broncos.

Leigh Leopards travel to Warrington Wolves in Super League on Saturday 20 April at 3pm.
