Ex-Leeds Rhinos man has “no regrets” about leaving as he respects Brian McDermott’s honesty over exit

Sam Hallas is headed to pastures new in 2023 as he joins Hunslet but this is not the only time he has made a move.

Hallas started his career with Leeds Rhinos before joining Bradford Bulls. He left the Bulls at the end of 2021 to join Newcastle Thunder but returned for the end of 2022 prior to joining Hunslet.

However, Hallas has no regrets especially about leaving his first club.

Speaking to Serious About Rugby League about his move away from Leeds, he said:

“I’ve got no bad taste in my mouth, I gave everything I had to Leeds, I’ve got no regrets about my time with Leeds.”

He initially left for Bradford on loan and spoke about the moment he made the switch to his home town team:

“I went on loan, that was a real turning point but again I had Joe Lumb who was so underrated as a hooker and them Scott Moore came over, he’d been in the NRL, so I was lucky to be learning from them.

“When Brian Mac told me I was going on loan to Bradford, I was a Bradford fan growing up, I was buzzing to be playing at a good level.”

He also respects the honesty of Brian McDermott when he chose to let him go and is grateful Bradford swooped in and gave him a new deal:

“Brian McDermott pulled me in his office and said ‘We’re really impressed with you at Bradford and we can’t fault your attitude in training’ but Matt Parcell had come in and he was unbelievable a so he said, ‘You won’t be getting much game time here, so we won’t be renewing your contract’ and so Bradford the day after said ‘we’ll have you’ and they took the contract on from Leeds.

“I was lucky to not be in limbo and I completely understand the reasons why, that’s just sport at the end of the day.”
